Mr. O’Neal’s fall has been stunning in its speed and ferocity. This spring, Merrill’s stock was trading around $95 a share, and Mr. O’Neal was being celebrated for transforming Merrill into a more aggressive, risk-friendly institution. Last week, the stock sunk to as low as $59 a share.
The events underscore that on Wall Street, even the highest paid chief executives with handpicked boards are not immune to the furies of investors and employees.
His fall is also a reminder of how dangerous it is to tinker with a firm’s culture. Having declared the idea of a nurturing Mother Merrill passé, Mr. O’Neal has discovered how vengeful a spurned culture can be.
Evangelist Juanita Bynum's $4.5 million South Georgia compound is scheduled to be auctioned off next month for non-payment of property taxes, officials said.
Ware County tax commissioner Steve Barnard filed a lien against the 23.6-acre property owned by Juanita Bynum Ministries on June 7, citing failure to pay $32,007.56 in 2006 property tax.
According to the lien, a $3,200 penalty and $2,240 in interest is also owed.
It's the latest legal drama involving the nationally known Pentecostal evangelist, who has been in the news in recent weeks after alleging she was beaten by her estranged husband, Thomas Weeks.
Bynum's publicist, Amy Malone, said Tuesday that Bynum had no comment on the tax bill or the planned auction.
Barnard said the property, on St. Bernard Trail near Waycross, will be sold at auction on Nov. 6 on the steps of the Ware County Courthouse. The auction will be canceled if Bynum Ministries, which still has ownership, pays the full amount before that date, he said.
Bynum's Waycross-based ministry bought the property for $4.5 million last year, according to Barnard.
He said there is a 7,487-square-foot house, a 6,748-square-foot house and a 1,366-square-foot house on the property. Bynum lives in one of the homes, he said.
Barnard said someone from Bynum's office called him last month, "wanting to know if they could set up a payment plan, and I told them if she sent me $25,000, I'd take it out of the [Nov. 6] sale, and she'd have 60 days to pay the balance."
That partial payment was supposed to be made by Sept. 28, Barnard said.
"I never received anything, and then last week, I received a check for $5,000 and someone from her organization called and wanted to know if we got the check," Barnard said. "I said, well, we got a check for $5,000 that was supposed to have been $25,000, and they wanted to know if that would take it out of the sale and I told them, no."

Imprisoned rapper Foxy Brown has hit out at reports she was placed in solitary confinement because she refused to take a drug test, insisting her poor hearing is to blame.
The hip-hop star -- real name Inga Marchand -- was sentenced to 76 days of "punitive segregation" earlier this week after violating three rules at Rikers Island jail. The 28-year-old was alleged to have been involved in a fight with another inmate, was verbally abusive to staff and refused a random drug test.
But Brown's manager, Chaz Williams, claims her separation was simply a misunderstanding -- because of her temperamental hearing aid.
He tells Billboard.com, "Really she didn't hear the request. She has a battery-operated device and sometimes it dies out." "There was an incident where a girl attempted to confront her and she stood her ground, but there wasn't any contact. Words were exchanged and that was it."
Brown was ordered to serve a year behind bars last month after a New York judge ruled she had violated the terms of her probation.
Whatever the real story, she is prolonging her jail sentence if she doesn't stay in compliance of the rules.
"This is the first fragrance that I wear," Carey told The Associated Press in an interview Monday. "I'm not really a perfume person at all...Things that are too strong and overwhelming, that's what I was always not a fan of."
Carey says the fragrance, which comes in a purple bottle with her signature butterfly icon on top, was based on some of her favorite things. One is a Moroccan incense; another is a flower called the Living Tahitian Tiare. But another scent mixed into the fragrance is unexpected: toasted marshmallows.

The Georgia Supreme Court has ordered the sudden release of Genarlow Wilson who was sentenced to 10 years in the Georgia state penitentiary for having consensual oral sex with a 15-year-old when he was 17.
In a 4-3 decision today, the Court ruled that the sentence for Wilson is cruel and unusual punishment. Wilson has already spent two years in prison.
Genarlow Wilson, 21, was convicted in 2005 when he was 17 of aggravated child molestation for oral sex with a 15-year-old girl during a 2003 New Year's Eve party at a Douglas County hotel. The sex act was videotaped. The former high school football player was acquitted of raping another 17-year-old girl at the same party.
Berry, who showed host Jay Leno photos of herself that she had distorted by using computer software, remarked that one snapshot in which her nose appeared cartoonishly large made her "look like my Jewish cousin."
After she made the comment, Leno quipped: "I'm glad you said it."

Wyclef talked to MTV about the young rapper's fate and even went so far to compare his music to that of the late rap legend 2Pac and the influence that his music carries.
"We definitely clicked in the studio," Wyclef said. "I vouch for the kid in the sense that I think he was one of the smartest rising stars in not [just] the music industry, but the world. I watched him on 'Hip-Hop vs. America,' and I saw the way he was talking just like Malcolm X. The conversation started getting deeper and deeper. And I think he has influence. When he speaks, it moves a whole generation."
Well, my opinion is if you are on Parole or Probation, one of the conditions is that you do not own or carry a gun. So although I applaude T.I. Artistist accomplishments, he is still a felon who ignored his probational requirements....that is the bottomline.
Seems Paris is on the "publicity" trail again. Here she has been seen around town with 50 Cents. Athough, seeing how 50 cents new album did not take the competition of Kanye West in sales, it could be him seeking "publicity."

A fellow student at SuccessTech Academy alternative school said Asa H. Coon, who was suspended for fighting two days earlier, had made threats in front of students and teachers last week.
"He's crazy. He threatened to blow up our school. He threatened to stab everybody," Doneisha LeVert said. "We didn't think nothing of it."
Armed with two revolvers, Coon fired eight shots and may have targeted teachers, Police Chief Michael McGrath said.
Math teacher David Kachadourian, who was treated at a hospital for a minor wound to the back of one shoulder, said Coon had been a student in a beginning algebra class he taught. But the 57-year-old teacher said he had not disciplined Coon and knew of no reason why Coon might target him.
There are 10,291 Hispanic American Commissioned Officers, 4 are Flag Officers, and 1 is a Four Star. Additionally, there are 743 African Americans, along with 29 multi-race members, at the Colonel/Captain level, compared with 10,142 Caucasians.
It is a shame, we have had so many different ethnic groups serving in the United States Military, dating back to the Civil War and still we have not had an significant advancement of minorities in the Armed Forces.
