Black National Anthem Controversy At Denver Stadium

Sen. Barack Obama said today that a jazz performer's decision to sing the "Black National Anthem" at Denver's State of the City speech this week was wrong. It appears Rene Marie, a jazz singer, surprised everyone

Rene Marie, the jazz singer who belted out a surprise performance of the black anthem, triggering a public outcry, said today that it wasn't a "self-centered and calculated publicity stunt." Rene was invited by the Mayor to sing the National Anthem , instead she decided to sing the first stanza of the black national anthem (and incorporate it with the star spangled banner).

below is the video.

But in a lengthy statement posted on her Web site, Rene Marie, she expressed her desire to sing that song as a tribute or rather testimony to living in America as a person under color.

I see it as the city officials and state officials of Denver, Colorado see it, she was wrong. In my opinion it was not a matter of song choice but rather what she was contracted to do. She was paid to sing the National Anthem, she did not do that. That would serve as breach of contract.

I totally agree with you. She was wrong and like you said, she was contracted to sing a particular song. I've got to give her this, she definitely had balls.

Hello there! {waves}

I heard that some black folks were not supporting her but I feel that she DID sing the National Anthem.... if her contract required her to sing the National Anthem and she sings it there should be no controversy... if they had SPECIFIED that they wanted the WHITE National Anthem then that would have been different....

They did not do that....

In absence of their specification, she used HER own judgment...

And to me....that is entirely within the legal parameters of her contract....

We will agree to just disagree on this one....

Peace, blessings and DUNAMIS!
