Old School Friday- Songs For Your Birthyear

Ms Grapevine and MarvalusOne have teamed up to create a meme titled Old School Friday and since I love my music I had to sign up to join! To join in the Old School Friday Fun go Here for guidelines.

Wow, y'all made me dig mon, for some songs. My birth year 1960 (and I ain't shame to say it cause damnit , I look good..lol) had some amazing artist.

One amazing song to come out of this era or rather timeline was Sam Cooke's , "Chain Gang."Same Cooke had 29 Top 40 hits in the U.S. between 1957 and 1965. Major hits like "You Send Me", A Change Is Gonna Come, "Chain Gang", "Wonderful World" and "Bring It on Home to Me" are some of his most popular songs.

1960 in Jamaica was the start of "new Sound" - Reggae! So this is right on time. One of the more popular songs at the time, combined this new sound reggae with the old time mento/ska sound. This piece was recorded in Studio One with the Folkes Brothers an Count Basie (what a classic duet).

This last selection was done by a very popular duo in the 1960's. This was actually one of their biggest hits. Brooke actually had two top 10 hit duets with Dinah Washington: "Baby (You've Got What It Takes)" and "A Rockin' Good Way (To Mess Around and Fall In Love).

Awesome picks! I am feeling Sam Cooke, I love his voice! Every time I hear that song I think of the movie "Cadence" with Martin & Charlie Sheen and Lawrence Fishburne.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Sam Cooke has one of the best voices ever, he was just smooth with it. He didn't have to force it. Chain Gang was played in our house a lot.

We call him Sam Cookie, because my husband's little brother didn't know how to pronounce "Cooke" so he called him "Cookie". And now as family joke we all refer to him as Sam Cookie. Not that you wanted to read or know all of that.

Another thing I like, his songs were short. They did not drag on and on.

Count Bassie on Reggae, I must say that is certainly a first for me. Reggae has come along way. I've heard the remake of this song, "Oh Carolina", and it sounds better than the original.

Dinah Washington and Brook Benton is a new one for me, even though I'm familiar with Dinah Washington. I like it.

"Rockin' Good Way" is my favorite here this week. I was getting into it!

I especially like the phrase "you better ask somebody...if you don't know what you're doin'"

oh snap! the 'chain gang' is a fly song; i never knew sam cooke was the originator because i had always heard another edition of it. great pick nonetheless.
