Rev. Jackson said, “This is one of the greatest families of the Christian faith. Pop Winans was part of an era of great singers that included Sam Cooke, James Cleveland and Aretha’s father Rev. C.L. Franklin. All these were tall trees that carried us through. What made Pop different is that he built a whole forest of great singers. This father has showed us what a great family can do. He was 76.

A statement from a Los Angeles public relations company representing the family said he died at a Nashville hospice, where he had been since January after suffering a heart attack and stroke last October.

Perfecting Church of Detroit, pastored by his son Rev. Marvin Winans, overflowed with more than 2,000 people who paid tribute to Winans, whose legacy lives on in his wife, Delores, nine children (including BeBe and CeCe Winans) and many grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Ronald Winans, of the Winans gospel group.
