Jamiel Shaw's Family Wants Crackdown on Illegal Immigrants

Many people might remember the young man Jamiel Shaw who died an unnecessary early in March. Charged with Jamiel’s murder is Pedro Espinoza, a 19-year-old alleged member of the 18th Street gang. Less than a day before Jamiel was killed, Espinoza had been released from jail, where he had been serving time for assault with a deadly weapon. Federal officials have determined that Espinoza could have been deported since he was smuggled into the country illegally as a toddler.

Jamiel's Law is a law proposed by candidate for Mayor, Walter Moore. To sum it Jamiel’s Law calls for a “no sanctuary” policy for gang members and an effort by the Los Angeles Police Department, immigration officials and the U.S. Attorney’s office to “identify, arrest, prosecute, imprison and deport illegal aliens who are, or appear to be, gang members or affiliate gang members.” Current law, known as Special Order 40, forbids the police to arrest someone on immigration violations alone.

His mother Anita Shaw, Army sergeant who was recalled from Iraq after the death of her son, said she planned to attend Espinoza's arraignment today before shipping out Thursday(tomorrow) to Kuwait and then to Germany.

"I'm safer, somewhat, in Iraq than my son is safe on the streets of the United States. It doesn't make sense," she told the council.

According to KCBS NEWS, it looks like they have found the killer of Jamiel Shaw. A known gang member Pedro Espinoza was scheduled to be arraigned this afternoon at the downtown Los Angeles courthouse on the capital murder charge in 17-year-old Jamiel Shaw Jr.'s slaying in the 2100 block of Fifth Avenue, just steps from his Arlington Heights home.

Jamiel was an up coming football star. His dad had mentioned that already several football organizations had been approaching him. Jamiel's mother, Army Sgt. Anita Shaw, was serving in Iraq when her son was slain. She called for community action to stop gang violence.
I am just happy that they have a suspect in custody. Sadly, this is an occurrence that affects the community everyday. It is not just this one case. It takes the media to bring cases like this in the forefront.

Many mourners gathered at the West Angeles Church of God in Christ for a funeral service for Shaw -- who was remembered Monday night at a public viewing as a young man with a promising future that was cut tragically short.


I spend several years in Los Angeles, where I had to watch the "colors" I wore and what my kids wore just to go to the store.

Football Star Gunned Down in Gang Attack

This story is so sad. It is also representative of what is happening to our kids. Police are seeking he public's help in identifying two gang members who fatally shot a 17-year-old Los Angeles High School football star in an unprovoked attack just a few yards away from his home in Arlington Heights.

Jamiel's mother, Anita Shaw, is a sergeant in the Army serving her second tour of duty in Iraq. KCAL9 reported she was coming home in the aftermath of her son's death.

The friends and family have recalled Jamiel Shaw as someone who was not affiliated with a gang and was apparently in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Police say football standout Jamiel Shaw, 17, was killed Sunday night when gang members approached him and asked if he was a gang member.

He was up and coming football star. His dad said that he was already being approached by several football organizations. What is so sad is that this story is probably one in many stories happening all over our nation in our country's inner city. It gets lost because this young man wasn't a celebrity, he wasn't a star, but to his mom and dad.

This story hit home to me because my son is currently attending College in Los Angeles. He was followed by the police a couple of days ago because he was wearing his Dallas Cowboy skull cap.
The police threw him up on the wall an if it wasn't for several passerby's who pulled out their cell phones (probably to video tape) who knows what might of occurred.

He was mistaken for a gang member simply because he choose to wear a "blue" hat (with a star on the front, which clearly said "Dallas Cowboys." He could of just of easily been shot by a gang member who thought he was a rival.

Here is a mother who is serving duty for her country in Iraq and her son is gunned down. When does all this gang violence end? The same cops that were trailing my son (because he didn't check what color hat he put on that day) where where they when these gang members pulled a gun on this young man. The world is real twisted.
