Old School Friday- Surprise

Well it is that magical day. Since I now have Fridays off I can actually participate- YEAH- and get to got to some of my favorite sites as well. This week's theme is a fun one. It is about songs people are surprised that Iriegal knows. Well, I have a very eclectic taste (as I am sure some of my favorite OSF family has was well).

So to start off I am dropping it with one of my favorites back in the day. The Little River Band has been my favorite for many years.




I also like Country. Yes Iriegal loves country music. I especially loved this song by the Dixie Chicks. I just loved the lyrics

Old School Friday- Songs with Baby In the Title

This song is a remake from the Temptations hit, "Since I lost my Baby." Derrick Harriott was a huge artist in the 1970's in Jamaica.



I was crazy about him in the 70's. I had a poster of him on my wall.



This is another one of my favorite songs. This was a prelude to Reggae in Jamaica. This is SKA music. Now a days in Jamaica if this song is played at a party in Jamaica it means the party is over.




and I haven't visited any OSF sites yet, so don't know if anyone has this one but this was from a solo album by Jeffrey Osborne. Lawd that man's voice is to die for..and DEM LIPS MON

Old School Friday- Childhood Singers

Wow, what a week, I can't believe it is almost the end of the month. I am on the West Coast so I know most have already gone to bed while I am writing this, but you guys know I love my "Old School Friday." Ms Grapevine and MarvalusOne have teamed up to create a meme titled Old School Friday. To join in the Old School Friday Fun go Here for guidelines.

First person that came to mind (of course it involves Reggae..lol)...was Bob Marley's children. Ziggy and the Melody Makers (which comprised of most of Bob's kids from Rita Marley), formed this group in the early 80's. This song was a very successful song for them in 1988.





I am dating myself. I use to love to watch the TED MACK HOUR. This was back in the 1960's. This show was the original "American Idol." I tracked down the rare footage of Irene Cara. It was interesting that because she "looked" Hispanic they played up that part of her heritage and didn't mention her African American roots. Ted Mack was one of the few television personalities that allowed blacks to perform on his show.



I am not to much a fan of this artist but no denying the quality and strength of her voice even at 7 years old. This is Christina Aguilera. Very mature sound

Old School Friday- Heart of Heart

Well, I made it to the end of the week. Lawd is indeed good. I love this weeks theme- Songs with heart in the title. You have to understand I am a "closet" romantic. So this is right up my alley.

I loved this song growing up. She was one of the more unnoticed people of the 70's but Candi Staton was he first who came to mind when I heard about this theme.








OMG....I can't believe I remember this. This is my "reggae" contribution this week. I actually liked the beat, but the video was chessy as hell. I wonder what happened to the guy in the video?

Old School Friday- Sophomore Year

Well it is that magical time again. Wow, where does the week go? I had this crazy exam yesterday, so really ready to unwind. Ms Grapevine and MarvalusOne have teamed up to create a meme titled Old School Friday. To join in the Old School Friday Fun go Here for guidelines.

I didn't go to High School in this country so the closest I can get to Sophomore year in this country is what we call 4th Form (Jamaica follows the English tradition).This is interesting because in Jamaica most of the students graduate when they are 13- 14 years old. So many of my classmates were about that age. I wasn't, I was older because originally I transplanted from New York, back to Jamaica. Long story for one o those other days.

Anyhow,this was around 1976, now in Jamaica Reggae was just getting into full swing, but so was rap music. For some reason Jamaicans loved rap music. I think it reminded them of the music we called, "ROCKERS."

Speaking of ROCKERS one of the hottest artist out Jamaica then was "KILLER MILLER." The one and only JACOB MILLER. Take a listen mon.



One song though that sure nuff got you grooving was "CAR WASH" by ROSE ROYCE...It didn't matter how tired I was when that song came on I was bumping and jumping.



and last but not least the "BOOGIE FEVER" was coming of age..DISCO was on! You had to put on your bell foot pants and your platforms and get on that dance floor.

Old School Friday

Hey, welcome back to Old School Friday. You know the blues are alright...So do all the old school

Sometimes I feel like I have been singing the blues all my life. Always that guidance from above the keeps me above the water. I think many people can relate to this weeks theme. Even the though the blues might put you in a melancholy mood, it also makes you remember the good things in life.

My first choice is Albert Collins. He had this unique sound that many musicians have emulated over the years. He was nicknamed, "the iceman" by people in the industry. Check out the way he handles those strings.




Here is where Reggae meets blues (you know I have to throw my reggae in there). Roykey Creo Demonstrates Reggae Ska Samba Blues scales and licks down and up strokes skanking two and four for acoustic and electric guitars

Old School Friday- Baby Making Music

Well, its about that time again, dang where are the days going. Ms Grapevine and MarvalusOnememe titled Old School Friday and since I love my music I had to sign up to join! To join in the Old School Friday Fun go Here for guidelines.

This week's meme is all about music that makes dem babies mon! The first person that popped into my head was "Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway" with "The Closer I Get To You" This was the song that did it for me back in the day.



See, that song was the "warm up" song for the lovemaking...Then next we had the "extreme heavy petting song," LSG had this song and it had all the great baby makers. (Keith Sweat, Gerald Levert and Johnny Gill). If you didn't get a baby from this song then something was wrong..lol



Now hold on tight we come to he ACTUAL ACT OF MAKING LOVE and my man (sorry Shae) Prince comes in..and BAM...he says, "Do Me Baby."



(I had to edit this because when I watched it I saw about 5 minutes of a video, why when I posted it it only gave me 2 minutes...dagnabit..lol)

and I had to throw my Reggae in their mon (afterall my name is "iriegal")

Freddie McGregor was one of the "crooners" (smooth talking jamaican man) back in the day. He came out with the remake of "Just don't want to be lonely," and turned it into a reggae hit.

Old School Friday-Breakup Songs

I tell you if I had money on every song I had for my breakups, I know that I would own that mansion on the hill by now.

I remember this song as my "very" first break up song....dang...I wonder where that dude is now. However Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway broke the pain down for me.



....and the Manhattans amplified it. When they sang this song in the 70's (I was an expert at breakups by then)...wow, I sure did have a lot of boyfriends..(irie shakes her head at the memories)..

Iriegal Joins World Refugee Day-6/20

I will be posting this on two of my blogs. World Refugee Day has actually been celebrated for many years by many countries and regions. First off I want to thank Wayne Hicks, over at Electronic Village for really allowing me to keep up with the Afrospear and all its collective areas. My blog here is just one aspect of my who I am. ( I have 12 and each one represents a portion of who Iriegal really is).

So many other bloggers out there give me the full scope of life in their own "blackworld." Combined we get to share such a wonderful wealth of information and unity. I am just loving it.

I want to just acknowledge the courage and resilience of all the refugees. To leave ones country and try to establish life elsewhere is not easy. (my parents did it, but they were not displaced, it was their choice). I also want us to keep in our prayers those who did not make it. Please remember Darfur an the people who are suffering daily. It is estimated that 9 million children are currently displaced around the world. Those are staggering figures.

This is the United States State Departments take on what "World Refugee Day" is.

The United States, on June 20^th, will join the international community in observing World Refugee Day, taking time to acknowledge the persecution and suffering experienced by those driven from their homes. Our commitment to protecting and assisting refugees is deep and abiding, part of our nation’s history, and it goes to the very core of our values. We remain committed to protecting and developing durable solutions for refugees worldwide.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has made refugee protection the theme of this year’s events. All refugees should have access to basic life-sustaining assistance, including shelter, food, water, sanitation, health, and nutrition.

The United States government is proud to be the leading donor of refugee assistance, contributing more than $1 billion dollars a year to support multilateral efforts to help alleviate the suffering of more than 36 million people worldwide including refugees, internally displaced people, and other victims of conflict.

The United States has resettled more refugees than all other countries in the world combined, historically and in the present. More than 2.7 million refugees have been welcomed into the United States since 1975, making tremendous contributions throughout our country through their talents, hard work, and creativity.
